Catholic Discipleship and Mentoring with Brother-to-Brother Ministries

Just what is it that we do through Brother-to-Brother Ministries?

We form men in Catholic discipleship and mentor men on their faith journeys and help them develop a deeper personal relationship with Jesus. We do this in the following ways:

  1. Bible Scripture study, verse memorization and applying biblical principles in our daily lives.
  2. Study of the Catholic Church Catechism and how to live out our Catholic faith as men of Jesus.
  3. One to one discipleship meetings and spiritual direction.

Man to man mentoring or one to one discipleship?

A mentor is a trusted guide, counselor, tutor or coach. A Christian mentor plays all four roles as he teaches, guides, listens, advises and encourages another man on his Catholic faith journey. A disciple is a man who learns from the teacher and passes on what he learns to other men. Therefore the answer to the above question is "both." We help men reach a higher level of commitment to being men of Christ (disciples) by building a higher level of personal relationship (mentoring).

What is that all about?

By virtue of our baptism, we are called to be laborers in the vineyard of the world (Christifideles Laici 2). In order to do so, we must have a personal encounter with Jesus the Christ that leads one to die to self and proclaim the Good News to others (Evangelii Nuntiandi 24). Brother-to-Brother Ministries was founded to help Catholic men live out their baptismal call to "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations..." (Mt. 28:19) by learning how to share the Good News with others through the one to one discipling process.

We asked the men with whom we meet two questions: What is the value of the ministry to them? What is the most significant thing they have learned?

Here are some of their responses:

"I value being able to study the Bible with another man and learn things about and from the Bible that I did not know. The study helps me put God's word in my heart and maintain my focus on Jesus Christ. I am being prepared to work with other men on their faith journey." - Terry Vice

"I am able to share the challenges in my life and receive support and advice from another man." - Dennis Speer

"Jesus and a better understanding of God's word. I am coming to understand that all Christians are called to fish for people by knowing and telling our own story." - Doug Kaiser
